Where to park in Trieste: a practical guide for drivers
Trieste is a compact city squeezed between the sea and a steep hill. For drivers, that means parking in the centre is scarce and expensive, many streets are narrow or one-way, and part of the old town is closed to traffic. Book one of our Sette Fontane lofts directly with us, the owner — no agency fees — and the private garage space is yours with the door code as soon as your stay is confirmed. Many of our guests drive in from Austria, Germany, Slovenia or Croatia: with a little information in advance you avoid fines and pointless loops.
The three options at a glance
| Option | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Paid covered garage | short stays in the centre, valuable cars | hourly and daily rates, open 24 hours |
| Blue lines (street parking) | a few hours | paid Monday-Saturday, 8 am-8 pm in most zones |
| Private garage space | stays of several days, work vehicles | no searching in the evening |
Covered garages in the centre
The main multi-storey car parks are run by Saba and Park San Giusto. The ones visitors use most:
- Saba Silos, on Piazza della Libertà, next to the railway and coach stations: very large, about 10 minutes' walk from Piazza Unità and the Canal Grande.
- Saba Foro Ulpiano, near the law courts, handy for central shopping streets.
- Park San Giusto, dug into San Giusto hill, with lifts up towards the castle and cathedral.
- Saba Ospedale Maggiore and Saba San Giacomo, convenient for the eastern side of the centre.
Rates change over time and between car parks, so check the operators' websites or booking apps before you travel.
Blue lines: how street parking works
Paid street parking is marked by blue lines (strisce blu). In Trieste it generally applies Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm; Sundays and public holidays are free unless signs say otherwise. Rates depend on the zone: in 2026 roughly €1.40 an hour in the most central red zone, down to €0.50 an hour further out. Pay at the meter or with the common parking apps; always check the sign on each street, because hours and maximum stays vary.
Some quick rules of thumb for foreign drivers:
- White lines are usually free, yellow lines are reserved (residents, disabled badge holders, loading), blue lines are paid.
- Blue lines are fine for unloading luggage or a short stop, not for leaving a car for days.
- In some streets parking is reserved for residents with a permit: the lines may look the same, the sign won't.
ZTL and pedestrian zones
The centre has limited traffic zones (ZTL) and pedestrian areas. Only authorised vehicles may enter, and cameras record number plates. Fines are sent to the vehicle's owner, which for hire cars means the rental company, who will pass the fine on to you with a handling fee, sometimes months later. Fines also reach foreign-registered cars.
In practice: don't trust your satnav in the old town (Città Vecchia) and Cavana, and if your accommodation is in a restricted area, ask your host how to get there before arriving. For our apartments in town we send the route and the most convenient garage before your arrival.
The advantage of a private garage space
Our lofts in the Sette Fontane area each come with a private space in a closed, covered garage, included on short stays and available on request for monthly stays, with a lift and no steps from the garage to the door. As one guest wrote: "The free parking was an advantage, as parking is hard to find in the city" (Airbnb guest). Another summed it up: "Great location, ample parking; quiet neighbourhood" (Airbnb guest).
From Sette Fontane, Piazza Unità is about 4-8 minutes by car or 26 minutes on foot, and there is a bus to the station just round the corner. Choose between the Terracotta Loft, the Green Loft and the Forest Loft.
And the apartments in town?

| Piazza Garibaldi | paid covered garages about 500 m away |
| Rossetti area | free street parking in the area |
Staying a month or more? You pay one fixed monthly amount, all inclusive (building fees, electricity, water, heating, internet) (contact us for a quote); a garage space at the lofts can be added on request.

FAQ
Do you charge agency fees?
No — you book directly with us, the owner, so there's no agency commission. Once your stay is confirmed you get the door code and can move in straight away.
Do I pay for blue-line parking in the evening and on Sundays?
Generally not: paid hours are Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 8 pm. Check the sign on each street, as there are exceptions.
Can I drive into the old town to drop off luggage?
Not into pedestrian areas and ZTLs without authorisation. Stop in a garage or a street outside the zone and continue on foot.
Will I get a ZTL fine on a foreign or hire car?
Yes, fines are sent abroad and rental companies pass them on. Ask your host for the route in advance.
